“The Ones We Left Ourselves For”

You know, I used to think that the hardest part about love was letting go. But lately, I’ve realized it’s the in-between.

It’s those quiet, aching moments when you both know it’s falling apart, but no one wants to be the first to say it. The heaviness in conversations that used to flow so easily. The way “good morning” slowly turns to “hey” and eventually, nothing at all.

No one tells you how disorienting it feels when the person who once knew you better than anyone becomes a stranger you hesitate to text. You find yourself typing out paragraphs you’ll never send, rereading old chats and wondering how you both went from we to was.

I’ve had those people in my life. The ones who felt like home in a world that never made sense. The ones I allowed into parts of my soul I didn’t even know existed. And maybe that’s the problem — giving someone the power to touch places you aren’t even brave enough to face yourself.

It starts beautifully.

The late-night conversations about everything and nothing. The kind of laughter that makes you forget the weight you carry. The plans you start building in your head. Vacations you’ll never take, songs that become our song, and promises you silently hope will hold.

But what no one prepares you for is the slow undoing.

The way their absence becomes louder than their presence. The way your phone lights up and it’s never them. Or when it is, it’s not the version of them you fell for.

They become distant, careless with your feelings. And you — you hold on tighter, hoping it’s just a phase. Hoping that love is enough to fix what neither of you wants to admit is broken.

I’ve learned that not all heartbreaks come with slammed doors or dramatic exits. Some are silent. Some leave no explanation. And some are so gradual, you don’t even realize you’ve been abandoned until you catch yourself feeling lonelier lying next to them than you ever did alone.

The worst kind of heartbreak is the one you can’t even be angry about because deep down, you knew.

You felt it in the way their eyes stopped lighting up when they saw you.

In the excuses.

In the absence masked as busyness.

In the conversations that felt like pulling teeth just to get them to care.

And yet — you stay.

Because maybe tomorrow will be better.

Because you’ve invested too much time.

Because you remember the good days too vividly to let them go.

But love isn’t supposed to feel like begging.

It isn’t meant to be a battlefield where you’re the only one fighting.

So one day, you’ll wake up, exhausted. Not just tired — but soul-weary.

You’ll realize you deserve softness.

You deserve reciprocation.

You deserve someone who won’t make you question your worth every damn day.

And when you finally walk away, you’ll mourn it. Not just the person, but the version of yourself that existed when you were with them.

The girl who believed in forever.

The girl who thought love could heal anything.

The girl who kept watering dead plants hoping they’d bloom again.

But loss teaches you things. It makes you softer, yes — but it makes you stronger too.

You’ll carry scars, but they’ll remind you of how deeply you’re capable of feeling. And how no matter how much someone tried to dim your light, you still made it through.

So here’s to the people we almost loved.

The ones who left too soon.

The ones we outgrew.

The ones who couldn’t see our worth.

And the ones we thought we couldn’t live without.

We did.

And we will again.

Love should be a two way thing. The moment it's just one person making effort, the relationship is set to crumble!
